DAS – NEW MEDIA DESIGN

Description

The study programme New Media Design is a three year academic programme in the field of art. It lasts for six semester with a scope of 180 ECTS. The programme enables acquisition of theoretical, professional and applicable knowledge in the area of theory and esthetics of new media, new and interactive media, computing, mobile devices, with emphasis on application of this practical knowledge in new media design. Enrollment is open to candidates of completed graduate academic studies. The studies are organized by the Bologna principles. Each course lasts for one semester. The programme is conducted through various forms of theoretical and practical teaching in the university premises: lectures, demonstrations, consultation, individual projects with professional supervision, continued editing from lecturers, study research work, project assignments, exams. Work and consultation with lecturer are conducted by email or skype, directly at the university or through individual work on tasks and projects.

 

Outcome of the Study Programme

The study programme of doctoral studies has a clearly defined and published outcome and role in the educational system. The objective of the study programme of the doctoral academic studies New Media Design is to establish a unique platform for education, development and advancement of students who wish to create new artistic, cultural and commercial expressions by using modern and up-coming digital technologies and media, as well as to participate in an academic environment as lecturers in the areas of art and new media. At the same time, students are introduced and informed about modern trends in digital arts, as well as about the connection between creating art work and new media. In this way, students develop their abilities to use most modern theoretical concepts and methodological principles in individual research, comprehension and analysis of theory of art and media. Students acquire knowledge and creative aspects of new media in theory and in practice, which enable them to create and realize new forms of artistic expression by application and new media design. In line with esthetic and technical criteria, students are enabled to set concepts, design and realize projects in the area of new media. The programme places emphasis on combining creative and critical thinking with practical and theoretical work, as well as improvement and defining individual creative thoughts, visual poetics and esthetics of each student.
 
The objective of the study programme of the doctoral studies New Media Design is realized through a three-year programme with structure which allows for acquisition of adequate theoretical and practical knowledge and skills in new media design by lectures in core and elective courses. The teaching is conducted over the first three semesters, while the fourth, fifth and sixth semesters are reserved for the preparation of the doctoral dissertation according to defined criteria.

 

Objectives of the Study Programme

The basic objective of the doctoral study programme New Media Design is to, by providing a unique, educational platform, assist in creating new generations of artists, innovators, creative people and educators whose tools of visual expression are digital media, modern types of human and human-machine interaction, esthetics and narrative of interactive art, visual programming, digital rhetoric.
 
The programme objectives are also to enable students to upgrade their thought and to develop in the field of theory of new media, as well as to improve their creative-artistic, as well as technological abilities to a level appropriate to their academic status. Furthermore, a course objective is to enable students, through interdisciplinary approach of combining art and technologies, to use research methodologies in the domain of new media, as well as broaden their range of creative work, esthetics and quality of their creative achievements. Along with practical knowledge, students acquire theoretical knowledge in the area of theory of new media of postmodern art, visual culture and philosophy of art. Students acquire knowledge in philosophical frames and develop critical thinking about art and technologies, as well as general issues in visual culture today. The study programme uses modern technologies, software and devices by which it is possible to create art in new media.

 

  • The study programme achieves:
  • • complete education of candidates competent to professionally and creatively work in the areas of new media, art and technologies
  • • development of critical and analytical thinking and improvement of research process with the objective to acquire new experience, development of individual esthetics and visual poetics, as well as methodologies of application of the acquired knowledge in the areas of culture, education and socially engaging activities.

AD665 Experimental Media

ECTS: 10
The course objective is theoretical and practical research in the field of integrating various media approaches when creating and constructing interdisciplinary artistic projects. Interdisciplinary approach means a combination of traditional arts (painting, sculpting, architecture, dance, film, literature, theater…) with new tendencies in the areas of digital arts (computer animation and post-production, interactive art, internet communications, video games…).
Syllabus:
Theory: research in various areas of artistic creation and consideration of possibilities of their integration in a single unit. At the beginning of the semester, each student has the possibility to select two areas of creativity, based on their interests and previous experience. Within the theoretical part, students prepare research papers and write an essay on the selected topic of creativity in which they investigate the possibility of their possible integration.
The tutorials deal with creating the concept of a specific art project based on the theoretical research of the selected areas of creativity. Students, with support from the lecturer, create an artistic project with a combination of at least two media approaches, one of which is a traditional art discipline, and the other is from the area of digital art. The objective is to create an interdisciplinary art work where the qualities of various artistic disciplines are logically and reasonably connected in a compact, logical artistic unit.

AD 615 Art and Technologies

ECTS: 10
The course objective is to introduce candidates to modern and up-coming technologies, i.e, to start up a dialogue between current artistic participation of students and directions where it could go, in what ways and under which conditions, by mapping available technological and performative possibilities in the area of new media.
Syllabus:
• Mapping key areas in new media art from the onset of internet
• Analysis of artistic directions as replies to the inflow of technologies in visual art
• The way technologies change the personal esthetics of authors – deconstruction of works of leading artists in new media today
• Analysis of creative activities of candidates and considering how the current esthetics could be upgraded
• Creation and production of an art work in the area of new media, art and technologies

IT645 Interaction and Visualization – Possibilities of New Media

ECTS: 10
Comprehending the relationship between art and computer technologies as dynamic units which interact more and more. Introduction to the possibilities of creating a virtual reality (virtual and expanded) and the role of art in their design. Analysis of technological basis for creating typical system of virtual reality.

AD625 Research and Development in New Media

ECTS: 10
The course objective is to introduce a methodological approach to project development in the intersection of art and technologies, from the initial creative concept to executive production. Setting realistic and feasible production frames with the objective of realization of a creative concept, as well as adequate selection of mechanisms and technologies are key tasks for each artist who wants to beatify the implementation of a thread of innovations and available technological modules in their project with the aim to realize the initial idea to the highest production level.

AD635 Advanced Animation

ECTS: 10
The course objective is to inform candidates of the modalities of use of advanced technologies in video production and animated content in art and design in new media, as well as enable them to work individually in development and experimentation in that field. Emphasis is placed on mechanisms of enriched the personal poetics and esthetics of candidates with the use of video in continued or interactive narrative form, as well as the principle of animation in two-dimensional environments and virtual reality.

AD645 Modern Web Concepts

ECTS: 10
The course objective is to inform candidates that the internet is not only virtual mimesis of existing media and digital transcription of data from real environments, but internet media which enables new concepts of creativity which destabilize traditional setting of authors, audiences, creativity, form and originality.

Exam project:
To create a communicative web project by using existing social media and creating an individual hyper-textual web presentation. The requirement for the project is that it cannot be realized without an internet connection. In addition, students submit textual explanation of the concept with theoretical background and references to similar projects (3-5 pages)

AD640 Seminar of the Doctoral Dissertation

ECTS: 10
Identification of growing demands in the area of modern art creating which create new uncovered spaces, as well as dictate new, revolutionary technological imperatives. Creating new visual codes of understanding in multimedia art, with and without conventional and allusive signs, with tendencies in group works towards the exam project. Each theoretical thinking in the process of creating in the electronic, digital, interactive, virtual, visible and invisible areas can be the foundation of this course.
Syllabus:
Symbiosis of understanding various professions of ideas, available skills, literary and dramatic supremacy. Freedom of choice is a philosophy of individualism, the principle of cooperation should provide each individual with well-being. Creativity, skills, knowledge and ability with the aim to develop modern art and culture. Connection of visual, artistic and performative arts in a single unit, science, technologies and engineering, information technologies with dramaturgy and psychology, or the latest achievements in the area of new media and design.
History and Theory of Art
ECTS: 10
The course objective is to introduce students to modern theoretical and methodological concepts of art history. Understanding and use of interpretative methods in their work – scientific part and study text in the area of history and theory of art.
Syllabus:
Students are introduced to the most present and most up-to-date methodological interpretations of theory and art history. Leading theoretical concepts which deal with the relation of history and art theory in cult, sacral, cultural, public, state, national and political context. Study, improvement and understanding of various theoretical aspects and numerous functions of art history in American, European and Serbian environments. Emphasis is placed on forms and function of New Art History and its gender and political discourse.

AD680 Poetics of Art

ECTS: 10
By working on historical examples, students are enabled to recognize and apply theoretical knowledge on modern art. During the semester, students are introduced to characteristic conceptual-theoretical methods which assist them to develop critical thinking and present arguments for their opinion through historical examples. Conceptual and theoretical issues related to movement, interpretation and consumption of art are analyzed, primarily through, although not exclusively, the western tradition.
Syllabus:
Topics: what is esthetics and who is relevant to make that call? Is “good“ art “beautiful“? Why are we interested in original and authentic in art? Is there objectivity in art? Does art imitate life, of life imitates art? How do new technologies influence knowledge and experience of art?
Practical work: individual work and critics with each student. Consultations and presentations.

AD660 Theory of Media

ECTS: 10
Developing theoretical – critical thinking, or practical engagement in the area of new media (television, radio, video, film, photography), as well as teach candidates for theoretical argumentation in their field of work in the new media (internet, interactive, multimedia, intermedia and digital culture etc).
The course theory of media deals with general and specific theories of media (electronic, printed and new media), or the interpretative-critical relation of candidates in this field. Topics dealt with are: problem insight into modern theory of media: precession of simulacrum and virtualization of reality: cultural and creative industries: issues of schemata in conscience, Society of spectacle and media based capitalism, cyber space and cyber time, media, branding and utopian worldviews, symbols and forms in media and their influence of the audiences, virtual communities, culture of dialogue and interactive communication, critics and power of media, media existence, post-individualism and imagination, convergence of media, multi -, meta – and intermediality.

MK656 Marketing and Arts

ECTS: 10
Understanding the relationship between marketing and art as units which interact more and more. Comprehension of the influence of the marketing phenomena in art as well as specific art forms. Analysis of the corpus of marketing activities used in promoting and exploiting art.
